Somewhere in Iraq

What happened on July 21, 2003 on a dirt road in Iraq was called an ambush. . An ambush in which young American troops never knew what hit them. It sounds so much like ambushes that have been going on for years, like when the first man hide in waiting behind a rock to struck against an animal to obtain food, or to eliminate his enemy. It also sounds like when General Custer was attacked by Sitting Bull at the little Big Horn.

In the example we are describing here, is an ambush that happened at 0630 hours without any notification to the young American Troops unaware that they were headed for sudden death. An enemy RPG slammed into their unarmored Hmmvee ripping the vehicle apart and creating a situation that in turn opened the military' eyes.

What was the situation that became such a point of interest other then the lose of life?

What was the point of eliminating this case as just another vehicle destroyed by the use of an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) on a dirt road in the desert of Iraq?

What was the wake-up call of all that happened that morning of July 21, 2003?

Was the lose of these young troops as well as the assets anything that should have become as lesson for all the troops in Iraq to learn from?

As we all know the lesson wasn't learned very well, since the number of troops and vehicles destroyed since the incident of this date has been more then we would like to remember. Roadside explosions have been almost an every day happening, and the question on everyone mind is why.

Like the cave man, he used whatever he could on the first go around to kill his next meal or his enemy. He did this until he discovered materials that he could use which made his task much easier.

In this case the enemy used very basic methods to create a hazard. The enemy team was classified as a minimum number of troops, which were able to strike and run. They were not experts in their field of warfare; they were cavemen that used what they had to create the hubs of hell on earth.

Note the use of a 105 High Explosive Shell covered with rocks, and classified as a Improvised Explosive Device.

As the overview shows of the incident, there were two (2) different locations where the IED's were positioned. The vehicle was extremely close to position of the first IED, and if the attackers had been successful there might have been much more destruction.

As can be seen in these photos of the attempts that were made by the attackers, the second IED was also crude, but no matter, if this connection had been successful, this situation would have been extreme.

What might have been the cause for this situation not being successful? What was the reason why these devises never went off like they should have?

Is there anything that might be learned here? Even though this situation could have been worse, all though lives were lost, the tell tale signs were never noticed which might have prevented this case from happening.

The answer to these questions might never be answered, we might never know if we have any answers, but here at MOSEC, we are are attempting to show some of the things that might be able to stop an individual from picking up something that they don't know, kick something that is in the way, not noticing something that could be a sign of sudden death, or seeing a sign that could point to survival.
