We had some really good questions sent in however, we chose Mike B’s from Southern CT. (Private EP/Security Driver) since it has been a popular subject for as long as SUV’s have been around. Mike’s question:
“I have been operating in the EP field for the last 15year. In this time I had some international experience, very often I find myself driving or being in the passenger seat of an SUV. Although I have attended two driving school I never attempted a J-Turn in an SUV. What are your thoughts on offensive tactics with this type of vehicle and what are my chances if this maneuver ever needs to be performed?”
Frank Lombardo,
Lead Instructor
Advanced Driving & Security
J-Turns can be performed with almost any type of vehicle. Height, weight and wheelbase play an important role. The procedure of turning the wheel counter clockwise is the same. The amount of force needed; however, is not the same. The inside rear tire is the tire that will lift and the out side front will take a heavy load.
The question presented is how fast should the vehicle be traveling when the maneuver is performed? Too much speed and too much snap of the wheel could be disastrous. Remember the vehicle’s front wheels want to turn around and the front end has stored potential energy. It will spin just as easy as a car, however it is not recommended since performing this maneuver in an SUV is a lot less forgiving than performing it in a full size car. One small error and you will end up upside down this defeats the purpose for trying to escape in the first place.
Congratulations Mike!!
Mike won a pair of Hell Storm Slash Resistant Gloves manufactured by Blackhawk.
Great for driving, shooting and most of all protecting yourself from potentially dangerous threats.

Strategic Alliance:
Action Target Academy and ADSI are proud to announce a new strategic training alliance. Bank Miller, Director of Training for Action Target Training Academy and Anthony Ricci, President of ADSI are in the process of designing several new training programs that will effectively bring together two very important Law Enforcement and Executive Protection disciplines. Firearms and Driver Training are two disciplines that need to be stressed in any type of LEO or EP training programs. Not only are they sometimes overlooked they are very rarely brought together.
Since most attacks happen in and around the vehicle, sometimes there is no way to drive away from or through the attack. It is essential that any team know how to drive around, back out, drive through and shoot from within the kill zone in order to escape and avoid the unthinkable. Our programs will be geared for Law Enforcement, Military and Executive Protection Teams/ Security drivers who work within different environments and various risk levels. Each program will be industry specific, very innovative and intense and address some of the most current issues and challenges that effect today’s operators.
